HEALTH RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT POLICY AT THE INTERNATIONAL
MEDICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY (IMTU).
HEALTH RESEARCH POLICY OBJECTIVES FOR
IMTU.
In line with the National Health Research Forum which is an appendage
administered by the National Institute
of Medical Research, (a premier health research government
institution administered by the Ministry of Health and now working
"hand in hand" with the famous premier American Health
Research institution the "Centre of Disease Control")
the IMTU health overall research objective is to act as a trend
setter for the following specific groups of objectives.
Specific objectives
- Health Status Objectives:-
Acquire ability to conceptualize research that reduces morbidity
and mortality; research that can solve local and regional health
problems; and research that can solve scientific questions in
different branches of the health sciences at the medical college.
- Health Policy development objectives:-
Achieve planned research proposals that facilitate creation of
national health priorities policy and strategy.
- Heath Systems Development Research
objectives:-Establish research that upgrades and improves
the health systems (including abandonment of out of date ones
or introduction of innovative ones); aim at maintenance of cost
effective, cost efficient and quality oriented health systems.
- Staff capacity building objectives:-
Acceleration of financial, material and manpower acquisition to
enable research capacity strengthening to produce research proposals
that lead to career promotion and job/post upgrading.
- Health monitoring objectives:-
Establish monitoring indicators that are responsive to the type
of health delivery services rendered (e.g. clinical officer: population
ratio instead of only depending on doctor: population ratio only).
- Production of well research
motivated graduates objectives:- Achieve having graduates
that are well trained and overwhelmingly motivated in epidemiological
concepts and health research through well treasured prizes and
other competitive measure; establishing students medical journal,
establishing research bulletin, and employing students during
their holidays on the research projects of their teachers.
- Staff motivation objectives:-Provision
of attractive terms, prestige and conditions of service to researchers
so as to motivate research and reward productivity.
- Infrastructure development
objectives:- Strengthening the research infrastructure
in the college by placing due emphasis on institutional development
and improving logistical and technical support to research operations.
- Priority setting objectives:-
Establish conceptual framework to focus at research that promotes
health and development on the basis of equity; and on the diseases
which disproportionately affect the poorest of the poor in Tanzania..
HEALTH RESEARCH PRIORITIES FOR IMTU
IMTU's experience on diseases and conditions out of the specialist
outpatient clinics and inpatients at Mwananyamala Hospital is available
in the medical college records to influence its priority research
choices. IMTU's priorities in research are according to the following
15 top conditions:- Malaria; acute
respiratory infections and pneumonias; HIV/AIDS; diarrhoeal diseases;
perinatal problems; diabetes mellitus; hypertension; tuberculosis;
malnutrition, immunizable diseases, urinary tract infections skin
diseases, cancer, maternal reproductive health, and accidents
